A New Era in Defense Innovation
In just three years, Ukraine’s defense sector has undergone a transformation few could have imagined. Once regarded as a conventional arms manufacturer, Ukraine is now a global hub for military technology – its products forged under fire and validated in real conflict.
The numbers tell the story. Defense production surged from around $1 billion in 2022 to $3 billion in 2023, reached $10 billion in 2024, and is projected to hit an astonishing $35 billion in 2025. Alongside this, Ukraine’s defense startup ecosystem is expected to cross the $1 billion mark next year.
This explosive growth has created a unique moment: an innovation ecosystem that not only meets the urgent needs of Ukraine’s defenders but also delivers battle-tested, affordable, and globally relevant technologies.
Scale, Speed, and Proof
Few defense ecosystems have demonstrated innovation at Ukraine’s pace. At the war’s onset, Ukraine had only a handful of drone manufacturers. By 2025, that number will have grown to around 500 active drone producers, creating one of the most dynamic drone ecosystems in the world.
Production has surged. Ukraine went from making only thousands of FPV drones in 2022 to producing about 1.5 million in 2024. In 2025, the goal is to triple that output to 4.5 million annually, with current production averaging around 200,000 drones per month.
Operational effectiveness has scaled just as rapidly. Drone strike accuracy improved from 30% in 2022 to 70% by 2024, and with increased production and iterative design cycles, Ukraine is sustaining or improving these high effectiveness rates into 2025.
This acceleration is not solely driven by necessity – it is reinforced by deliberate policy. Government programs such as Brave1 have provided millions in grants, enabling innovators to move from prototype to battlefield deployment in months instead of years. The sector’s maturity and international relevance were underscored at the 2024 Berlin defense tech conference, which showcased more than 70 Ukrainian MilTech firms to a global audience of 1,000+ participants.
Seven Game-Changing Ukrainian MilTech Companies

Swarmer – The Power of Autonomous Swarms
Swarmer is pushing the boundaries of drone warfare with AI-driven swarm intelligence, enabling UAV fleets to operate as a single coordinated system. On the battlefield, this allows saturation attacks that overwhelm enemy air defenses and electronic warfare. Backed by $2.7 million in seed funding, Swarmer is already attracting global attention, with potential applications in logistics coordination and disaster relief.
Himera – Communications That Can’t Be Silenced
Himera produces tactical radios resistant to electronic warfare, employing frequency-hopping spread spectrum and mesh networking. Ukrainian brigades rely on Himera’s systems to maintain command-and-control under intense jamming. With $375K in early investment, its technologies also apply to emergency response and infrastructure security.
Buntar Aerospace – Affordable Eyes in the Sky
Buntar Aerospace develops low-observable reconnaissance drones with advanced mission management software, delivering high-end ISR at 10–20% of Western costs. Its UAVs, already deployed by Ukrainian operators, are EW-hardened and long-range. With $4 million in funding and three acquisitions in 2024, Buntar is scaling fast.
Karadag Technologies – Fighting Back Against Enemy Drones
Karadag specializes in counter-UAS solutions, with its Obriy detector providing a 2.5-4 km protective radius. These systems are already securing Ukrainian logistics hubs from FPV drone attacks. With counter-drone systems now topping global procurement lists, Karadag’s solutions are arriving at exactly the right time.
Promin Aerospace – A Rocket Revolution
Promin is revolutionizing microsatellite launch with its “rocket-eating” fuel architecture, where the rocket structure gasifies as fuel. This innovation enables low-cost, ultra-light launches vital for sustaining satellite constellations during conflict. Tied into U.S. R&D partnerships, Promin is positioned at the intersection of defense and commercial space.
TerMIT (Tencore) – Robotics on the Battlefield
TerMIT (Tencore) builds modular unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) adaptable for logistics, casualty evacuation, reconnaissance, or combat. Tested under fire in Ukraine, terMIT systems have already proven lifesaving in CASEVAC missions. A $3.74 million raise in 2025 is driving production scaling and advanced autonomous navigation development.
PiranhaTech – Defending Against the Drone Threat
PiranhaTech develops UAV jammers and “Dome” EW protection systems to shield maneuver units from enemy drones. Already integrated with Ukrainian armored brigades, its systems are a critical layer in modern air defense. Supported by Brave1, PiranhaTech is rapidly refining its solutions based on frontline feedback.
Why Investors Should Pay Attention
Battlefield Validation – Real-time testing against a near-peer adversary compresses development cycles.
Disruptive Economics – Comparable performance to Western systems at a fraction of the cost.
Government Support – Programs like Brave1 de-risk early innovation.
Dual-Use Potential – AI, autonomy, and sensing technologies have clear civilian applications.
Strategic Partnerships – European governments and defense primes are already integrating Ukrainian innovations.
